Stories taking place at a headmaster’s office form a separate series during which we will get to know not only the governor of the educational lyceum himself, but also many of its inmates. Needles to say that their frequent visits to the headmaster’s office are far from being pleasant. The respectable character of the governor is not devoid of various – sometimes rather antagonistic – personal qualities. After all, he is only human like everybody else, isn’t he? Sometimes prudent and smiling, sometimes frowning and serious, always educated and wise, but very often prone to anger and quick-tempered. Especially those inmates of his institution committing immoral, undignified and inappropriate offences can awake his just anger – there are plenty of reasons for this. The headmaster has two simple and clear principles: the cane can save young girls from going to hell and who spares the rod spoils the children. That is why this good and wise man has a special polished mahogany table next to his office desk with several rows of different-sized canes and why his office is dominated by an ancient bench used for administering various kinds of punishment to the offenders. This bench is guaranteed to have left its imprint in memories of whole generations of students. Let us have a closer look at their everyday life.
Today, you have an opportunity to see the first part of the series. It shows that lying does not pay, that honesty is the best policy and that students trying to cheat will fare badly.
Miss Dolezalova, the daughter of a wealthy factory owner, has considerable problems with punctuality. She knows only too well that it would not be the first time she is punished for this offence against the school regulations. Extremely terrified, she tried to forge her daddy’s signature on the excuse note.
Unfortunately for her, Miss Milerova, the form master, is no fool and the girl is quickly sent to see the school headmaster with an explanation note saying the following:
Dear Mr. Headmaster,
The signature on the excuse note produced by Miss Dolezalova appears to be rather dubious.
Yours sincerely
Mrs. Milerova
The contrite girl does not deny her guilt and is quickly sentenced by the headmaster:
“Since the humane regulations set by the founders of our institution do not allow more than twenty five cane lashes for any individual offence, you shall receive the following punishment: twenty five lashes for being late and additional twenty five for trying to cheat.”
The girl has every reason to be ashamed and very, very afraid. Not only is she getting a very painful trashing with cane no. 3, but she will have to pull her knickers down and show the traces of recent lashings she has received at home. Her wheals had no time to heal properly and today’s portion will only make them worse. In addition, although she needs to pee very badly, she is not allowed to go to the toilet. Her only chance is to use a chamber pot hidden behind a screen and reserved for the first-formers…
and here it comes. The girl, her buttocks bare, is tied to the formidable bench and subjected to some merciless cane-lashing. The executor is very experienced and her buttocks are quickly covered in bloody stripes. At the end, Miss Dolezalova has to suffer not less than fifty-five lashes, as she is given a special “bonus” for not counting out them aloud.
and now, she has to go and kneel on a wash board. This is one of the most feared habits of the director, together with his affection for taking photographs of his executions. The clock is ticking, cigarette butt-ends are spilling over the ash-tray standing on the desk and the young lady suffers not only from the bumpy surface of the torturing instrument, but also from the wheals on her red and swollen buttocks.
